Guess it would be appropriate to say it felt a little “other worldly” as this 16-time winning Band prepared to reveal this year’s theme, “The Secret of the Outer Limits”.  The venue chosen was the elegant Metropolitan Centre in Scarborough, ON.  which featured a large ballroom and well over 1000+ people who for the most part were perched facing the stage ready to see what the Band would come with this year.

Music this year was provided by Soca Vibes, Soca101, Invincible, Wuk-Up Productions, and Aaron Saldenah – and while they spun the best in Soca in the hours before the curtains were drawn to keep everyone entertained, it was the costumes that everyone wanted to see.  Here are the 16 (yep, count ‘em….SIXTEEN) sections of “The Secrets of the Outer Limits”:

So, in keeping with the trend of 2011 – sparkling jewels and plumage were abundant in many of the sections.  There was also strong use of “metallic” colours such as silver, copper and icy blue that spoke well to the “Outer Limits” theme.  Good choice for a very “galactic” theme! One thing that really stood out (for me) was the very well executed male costumes.  It does happen that sometimes male costumes are not the central focus, but Saldenah Carnival spared no detail in ensuring the males would be well adorned.   Let’s get to the Highlights and Lowlights:

Highlights:

  • ·         Sections that did an exceptional job in capturing the main theme included “Lunar Eclipse”, “Vixens of Venus”, “Solar Flare” (male) and “Cyborg: Interstellar Beginnings”.
  • ·         Venue: The Metropolitan Centre is a very elegant facility that added a touch of glamour to this highly anticipated launch.

Lowlights:

  • I had hoped that with the futuristic imagery of “The Outer Limits” that there would have been a few more cage bras which I believe would have played well into the theme.
  • ·         The serpent-style plumage on one of the model’s headpieces did not fare well down the runway, and fell off a couple times during the presentation.  It happens, but hopefully that design gets adjusted to ensure a safe (and sturdy) walk down the Lakeshore.

Darling Nicky’s Final Thoughts:

Even though there are still a few more bands to launch throughout the remainder of May, it’s safe to say (for many), Saldenah was the last Category A (Large) Band to present before the decision-making begins.  Widely known for a large percentage of repeat players, it is important that if you wish to play Mas with Saldenah Carnival in 2011 that you don’t delay in registering (which can be said of all the Bands really) because nothing is more of an “eye-stab” then choosing too late, only to discover the section you like is SOLD OUT! Besides, you don’t win “Band of the Year” 16 times for no reason!

2011 promises to be one of the most exciting year’s ever for the Toronto Carnival, and on behalf of Caribbean Lifestyle Media, we wish Saldenah Carnival a wonderful season!  Special thanks to Louis and Ronny Saldenah.

This, however, was not the case for those in attendance who braved superstition and came out to the unveiling of…….. SECRETS OF DE OUTER LIMITS…….

VENUE/ACCESSIBILITY:
The Metropolitan centre is located at 3840 Finch Ave. East, Scarborough. With ample parking and a trendy layout the facility easily and successfully hosted the event that made for an memorable moment for those in attendance.

VIBES:
All you have to do to peak anyone curiosity is to tell them you have a secret that you are going to let them in on….lets take  as an example…. VICTORIA SECRET. Any man upon learning that he may ….see,  expose or glimpse Victoria secret will  turn up ON TIME…. EVERY TIME. For he knows that the revelation of this secret could have stimulating consequences.  SECRETS OF DE OUTER LIMITS also achieved this result….With 16 space age inspired sections to choose from, including a HOTTT one from DR JAY, you MUST find something you like. The Saldenah family in their infinite wisdom even included a section for those wishing to be  a little more reserved in their costume selection while at the same time being comfortable cool and still sexy.

So in keeping with their theme all I have to say is this:

There is nothing wrong with your eyes. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. They are controlling transmission. If they wish to make it louder, they will bring up the volume. If they wish to make it softer, they will tune it to a whisper. They will control the horizontal.They will control the vertical. They can make you roll yuh waist or make it flutter. They can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. On Caribana Saturday, sit quietly and they will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your eyes. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to…   SECRETS OF DE OUTER LIMITS……Saldenah 2011!!!!!!!

MADNESS last night!! Thousands filled the Metropolitan Center. I real tired boi!!!! Despite some hiccups I was pleased with presentation. 15 sections in total.  This year’s goal was to stick to the theme. In past years Bands(Saldenah included) stopped portraying the theme. Not this year. When you see the costumes in person  you will some aspect of SPACE in it…

Registration begins tomorrow. The website will be up as well!!
