Duane O’Connor has dethroned Karene Asche at the Calypso Monarch competition to secure the $1 million first prize.
O’Connor ‘s two songs, “The Hunt is On” and “Long Live Calypso,” received the judges’ collective nod to take home the crown at the Dimanche Gras show. He is also the Young King for 2012.
Former Monarch, Kurt Allen, placed second. He received $750,000 for his two selections, “Long Live Calypso” and “When Will It End.”
Third place went to last year’s Monarch, Karene Asche. She received $250,000 for “Against All Odds” and “You Will Win the Battle But.”
Meanwhile in the other competition, Charris Bovell is the new Queen of Carnival while Roland St. George is the King of Carnival. Bovell portrayed Mother of Humanity-The Weeping Madonna. St. George portrayed Ralliez-Vous A Mon Panache Blanc.
